This thread gives those affected by the Code the opportunity to discuss and comment on the consultation document.

The Code of Recommended Practice for Local Authorities on Data Transparency was issued in September 2011. It aims to put power into people's hands by making data generated by local authorities available and accessible to the public.

We are now consulting on making it a legal requirement to publish data specified in the Code (through regulations under section 3 of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980).

Code of Practice - Consultation - http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/localgovernment/makingthecode

The Code will be uploaded to the site for a period of 8 weeks (until Thursday 20th December 2012), during this time we would be grateful for your feedback.

The Code is concerned with making data generated by local authorities available and accessible to the public. The formal and high level document is intended to set out the requirement to publish data, the minimum expectations and the considerations while addressing such issues as the scope, formatting and timing of the publication of data.

Transparency is the foundation of accountability and the public has a right to know how their money is spent and the decisions made on their behalf. If we want the public to play a bigger role in our society and be able to hold central and local government to account we need to give them the tools and information to do so.

This forum is intended to provide a place to discuss and comment on the Department's data and our transparency policy.

Corporate transparency
The Department is doing all it can to make its own spending data as transparent as possible and has been publishing its spend since August 2010.
Code of recommended practice for local authorities
All local authorities in England are expected to be making their own spending data above £500, senior salaries and contracts / tenders available to the public from the end of January 2011. The Government wishes to extend transparency to other areas of local authority data and is issuing a Code of Recommended Practice for consultation. Comments are very welcome on the proposed Code.
